Our Mission Statement

The Mission of Safe Communities of the Hill Country is to help people come together in the community to create a sense of awareness, understanding, support and leadership in which to implement effective local programs to eliminate injuries and suffering on the road, at work, home or play.

The Safe Communities Foundation

The Safe Communities Foundation, launched on April 23, 1996 is a unique partnership between the private and public sectors that is dedicated to making Canada the safest country in the world in which to live, learn, work and play. Working at both a grassroots and a national level, the Foundation believes that Safe Communities are a basic human right.

The Foundation is the vision of Paul Kells, Safe Communities Founder and Vice Chair. Paul's 19-year-old son, Sean died as a result of injuries sustained in a workplace explosion. Sean did not receive any health and safety training and was not told that the chemical he was handling was hazardous and flammable. The workplace was in violation of health and safety regulations at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels of government. Sean's family knew that his death was preventable.

Paul Kells envisioned a world where no family need ever experience the pain and suffering of such a loss. Working with a concept developed by the World Health Organization, he created the Safe Communities Foundation.
